Change of Venue for Business Training Course  November 26, 2008

In response to the great interest from the Provo community in our Business Training Course, MBM is moving this portion of our operations to Dixon Middle School. At this larger venue, we will be better able to accommodate all those who wish to attend the course. In addition to space, Dixon offers other helpful amenities, such as personal computers for students, that will greatly facilitate MBM's instruction.

Our current clients will be meeting at Dixon starting on 5 December 2008. We will also hold our graduation ceremonies there the following week. Congratulations, fall class of 2008! You made it!

If you or someone you know has not been able to attend this time around, do not despair! Beginning 23 January 2009, we will begin another Business Training Course at Dixon. We will continue our traditional classes in Spanish, and we also anticipate beginning our first-ever classes in English.

If you are interested in joining our classes, or would just like to learn more, please click on the "contact" link at the top of your screen. We'd love to hear from you!

Inspiring words from Warner Woodworth, MBM Founder  July 29, 2008

We're now wrapping up the last of summer 2008 client training sessions... and issuing some 13 loans for new microenterprise start-ups. I estimate that among our client population each microentrepreneur provides economic benefits to 5 individuals in their household, which suggests that MBM's efforts over the past 2-3 months will empower 60-70 people!

I appreciate the work of each trainer and manager--whether loan officer, marketer, secretary, PR or tech expert, accountant, director, or president. The same is true about those who gave us facilities, like Centro Hispano, or served as mentors to our start-ups. You all made a huge difference as we now roll out MBM with significant new funding so we can impact greater numbers of poor Latino families and move them onto the path to economic self-reliance!

When we launched this little project in my Social Entrepreneur class back in 2003, many voices warned us we would not succeed. They claimed Hispanic immigrants were not responsible, or that they were lazy. We knew the opposite was true. They claimed that BYU students were merely youngsters who knew nothing about microcredit, banking, or starting businesses. Again, you proved them wrong.

I think such individuals just simply could not envision the possibilities. Remember the insightful words of the great German philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: “If the eye were not attuned to the sun, men could not see it.” As we look back on 5 years of increasing social and economic impacts, the evidence is clear: We could see the light of the sun. By doing so we now have a business model that works right here in Utah Valley.
